5 Lessons You Can Learn From a College Student
MAKE A FRIEND IN EVERY CLASS.
In college, it is nearly impossible to make it to EVERY.SINGLE.CLASS. or even truly just grasp and understand the material. Making a friend or study partner in every class is one of the smartest things I learned to do. Whether you missed a few notes, didn’t make it to class from a hangover, or just can’t grasp the material, having a friend in the class will help in the long run.
THE WEEKEND STARTS ON THURSDAY.
Something that surprised me in college is learning that the weekend truly starts on Thursday. All the parties, events, and epic bar nights begin on Thursdays. If you want to be a part of the festivities, it is important to get all your work done beforehand, get your outfits planned, and get ready to enjoy college night life! College students love party and alcohol, so why not get the weekend started early? Sometimes, events happen even earlier in the week which is why it is ALWAYS important to be on top of your schoolwork at all times. You never know what day the fun will begin!
KEEP IN CONTACT WITH YOUR PROFESSORS.
Making sure that each of your professors knows your name and face is super important to having a healthy school life. Communicating with them during office hours, sending emails, questions, and comments about assignments really tells the professor that you are a student who cares about their grades and wants to make sure that you are grasping as much material as possible from their class. Keeping in touch with them even if your grades are not “bad”, really impresses them and makes them more willing to help you in case you (God forbid) bomb a really big assignment. Professors are people, too and they understand that life happens!
BE FINANCIALLY LITERATE.
College is when you TRULY learn if you know how to budget and save money. There have been times where I have had $2 in my account nd there have also been times when I had a $1,000. I AM TERRIBLE AT BUDGETING!! If i see something I think is cute, I’m going to buy it. If someone asks me to go to Olive Garden on a Tuesday at 12:30pm, yep I’m going to go and also spend $30.. Money is for sure my biggest issue. So, people I say all this to say, if there’s a free event on campus giving out food, GO! Ask yourself if you TRULY need those Uggs or is it just a want. Sure, you work hard and splurging is sometimes necessary. When you go into Walmart, have a LIST of what you need. Don’t just go in there and start grabbing things (Yes, I’m guilty of this too!!). Money does NOT grow on trees. Seriously, it doesn’t! One of my favorite college budgeting websites is Budgeting for College.
BALANCING & PRIORITIZING
Of course, you're in college to learn and make a career for yourself but if you only study, study, study, eat, and sleep you will quickly find yourself in a depression. Socializing and making friends in college is important too and there must be a balance between schoolwork, a social life, exercise, and of course time for fun. Without a balance of these things, college will become stressful and you will surely miss the best parts.
College is fun. College is hard. College is stressful. College is what YOU make it. What other tips do YOU think should be added? Or what did you find helpful? Leave me a comment!
